Avian Illness

You do cross my mind sometimes
like a lone gull drifting over the seascape.

I watch you come and go, disappear
with my foggy breath into the night.

Your wings still snag my heartstrings,
splintering me a little less each day.

I am left with feathers in my hand.
Silky smooth, these soft tokens of loss.
