Grandpa

that night everybody

went to see you but me

stayed home alone maybe

glued to a Nancy Drew

I admit I didn’t want to

see your tired melting candle face

and talk to the sad pillows

about science class today

maybe if I’d remembered Fuzzy bear

on the picnic table when I was six

if the crows hadn’t marred his eyes

with rough white cataracts maybe

time wouldn’t wither you so fast

maybe you’d have pulled me on your lap

and called me bunny again

Grandpa please forgive me

I didn’t know

it was my last chance
